GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. Subject Area/Credits: For each semester course offering which is completed successfully, with a "D" or better, five (5) credits of required or elective credits are issued. To obtain credits, an "A", "B", "C", or "D" grade is required. CSU/UC MINIMUM GRADE C OR BETTER IN ALL A-G courses. Unless otherwise noted in the course catalog, all courses are typically a year long. English HS - 40 CSU/UC: B REQUIREMENT- 4 years. Mathematics HS - 30 Must include Algebra I. Recommend you take 4 years. CSU/UC: C REQUIREMENT - 3 years: Algebra I and II and Geometry. Physical Education HS - 20 Fine Arts OR World (Foreign) Language** HS - 10 Example: Basic Design OR Spanish 1 will count (NOT BOTH). CSU/UC: **E AND F REQUIREMENT: STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE BOTH A YEAR OF FINE ARTS AND A MINIMUM OF TWO YEARS OF THE SAME WORLD (FOREIGN) LANGUAGE. EXAMPLE: BASIC DESIGN AND SPANISH 1 AND 2. Social Science HS - 30 World History, US History, Amer. Govt./Economics. CSU/UC: A REQUIREMENT - 2 years: World History and American (US) History count. Science HS - 30 Must include 1 year Life Science (Biology, Anatomy) and Physical Science (Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics), Third year is an elective choice from either Life or Physical Science. Recommend you take 4 years. CSU/UC: D REQUIREMENT - 2 years: Lab-Life science and Physical Science (Biology, Earth Science, and/or Chemistry or Physics or Anatomy). Practical Arts HS - 5 (Think of life/career skills courses - ROP career courses, technology, etc.) Health HS - 5 Computer Education HS - 5 Electives HS - 55 (Any course beyond the requirements above: consider options that will give you experience in your long-term career pathway and/or your college major). CSU/UC : G REQUIREMENT - 1 YEAR. Any course beyond required A - F. For example, taking a 3rd year of Foreign Language, that 3rd year would count as the g elective. Total HS: 230 credits earned. In addition to the graduation requirements: All students must complete a course that meets the state content standards for Algebra I (EC 51224.5). A passing grade (D) second semester validates the requirement (district policy). If a course is repeated to improve a grade, credit will be assigned only to the higher grade. Six class periods assigned is the standard student schedule. @ MVS, Seniors should be enrolled in at least 4 periods a semester. Any questions or exceptions, contact Dr. Pietrolungo. College entrance requirements vary; it should be understood that meeting SVUSD's high school graduation requirements does not guarantee entrance to specific colleges. Visit your Naviance account (student.naviance.com/mvista) to further explore college options, requirements, etc. STUDENTS WHO WANT TO ATTEND ANOTHER HS IN OUR DISTRICT WHILE FULL TIME AT MONTE VISTA, NEED TO CONTACT VIA EMAIL DR. P FIRST. THEN, USUALLY AROUND THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL, DR. P WILL CONTACT THE RESPECTIVE PRINCIPAL AT THE HS YOU WANT TO ATTEND AND GET PERMISSION. THEN WHEN APPROVED, OUR REGISTRAR CHRISTA WILL WORK WITH THE OTHER SCHOOL'S REGISTRAR TO GET YOU DUAL ENROLLED, AND YOU START THE CLASS THE NEXT OR SAME DAY. Monte Vista The Independent Learning Academy - (SVUSD): Math/English (No Honors or AP except Statistics), Social Studies (WH, US, Govt. Econ, no AP) , World Languages: French and Spanish (All Levels up to AP, No Honors), Credit recovery, go ahead or grade improvement. No electives other than WL. Not available: PE, Computer, PA, FA, etc. Courses are a-g, but be sure to check our a-g provider list to be sure which courses. NCAA does not allow CR from our school. See your HS/MS counselor/administrator to make the referral for you, as the student should not be making the referral. COMMUNITY COLLEGE DURING SCHOOL YEAR/SUMMER: See your counselor for the Special Admissions (Dual enrollment) form with Memorandum of Understanding before registering. Student has to be enrolled in HS to be considered special admit. Three (3) unit course = 10 High school credits.
